First Time Roughing Out in the Open

I loved the land of the hobbits. The air was cool and crisp. The landscape was breathtaking. But never had I thought that I would rough it out staying up for the night in the car.

The plan of holiday trip was filled with many changes. We had been changing the arrival, departure dates and even the airport destinations several times. In the end, we landed in Auckland past midnight.

It was about 2 am when we finally cleared the customs, picked up our luggages and our rental car. We then hunched over the free maps and accommodation guides to chart out our next stop, in a cafe at the airport. We drove for a good 3 hours through the night to Waitomo. With no lodging in sight, we spent the remaining hours sleeping in the car, with the engine off and car windows slightly wound down, before daylight arrived.

When morning came, we drove our car in search of food. We had a hearty breakfast at The Big Apple Cafe which had an adjoining orchard before setting off to our first visit stop.

Welcome to New Zealand. While we were still in bleary eyes, we would adapt in no time and make this trip another great adventure!
